Yes, the stomach is a key organ in digestion (Chapter 11 covers the digestive system in detail), but it also secretes hormones that are used during digestion, making it a gland. The stomach secretes a group of hormones called gastrins. Many types of gastrin molecules â small, medium, and large â are responsible for stimulating the secretion of gastric acid. Gastrins also control the sphincter muscle at the bottom of the esophagus, thereby controlling when food can be passed into the stomach. Other cells in the stomach produce the hormone ghrelin, which targets the brain to stimulate the hunger.
